Stunning Antique German Satin Birch Biedermeier Secretaire, circa 1820.
A wonderful example of an early 19th Century Biedermeier fall-front desk in excellent condition. Part ebonised with predominantly quarter veneered birch maple, it is a beautiful statement piece of furniture for a grand study or hallway.
A slim upper locking drawer, with ebonised fin-shield escutcheon, sits below a classical surbaisse pediment topped by an elliptic crown.
Below, the bureau section gives no excuse for untidiness with a central lockable cabinet surrounded by an array of 15 various drawers, all with ebonised handles.
The central door has a beautiful part-ebonised star inlay and is flanked by two ‘secret’ drawers pulling out from behind the pillars. With wide drawers above and below, and a bank of five smaller bow fronted drawers at either side, there are plenty of storage options within this exemplary piece. This whole section is fronted by the lockable, drop-down desk top, beautifully quarter veneered and again with an ebonised shield escutcheon.
At the base, you have three graduated, lockable full-width drawers - again skillfully veneered and ebonised. All supported at the corners by four ebonised bun feet.
This secretaire comes in excellent antique condition, with only minimal signs of wear or very minor areas of cosmetic damage, and with the original key. It is a truly quality piece, having been previously sold by a top London auction house in the mid 1990’s for over £20,000.
